Demonstrative Pronouns in English

 Indicative pronouns in English are divided into near and far categories and are very common. This lesson introduces you to different types of pronouns and their uses.

 

Close pronouns

this and these are close reference pronouns used to refer to objects or close people. They have different uses in English, and we will get acquainted with some of these uses in the following:

 

1. To talk about people or objects nearby. Consider the following examples:

This is a nice cup of tea .

 

2. To introduce people to others for the first time. Consider the following examples:

This is Janet .  

These are my friends , John and Michael  


3. To introduce yourself behind the phone. Consider the following example:

 Hello , this is David , Can I speak to Sally ? 

 

Pronouns pointing away

that and those are far-reaching pronouns used to refer to distant objects and people.


1. To point to distant objects and people. Consider the following examples:

 This is our house , and that’s Rebecca’s house over there . 


2. . Use that to refer to a letter or action in the past or present.

 A : Shall we go to the cinema ?
